Bulkhead for the Shelter Deck

As with the Bulkheads in the previous issues, I painted the inner walls of this Bulkhead to light-block it – see Issue 89 for details. And, as part of my Frosted Windows mod, I added tiny strips of sanded acrylic sheet behind the Grille openings, as shown:

Then, since this Bulkhead is also the forward wall of the aft well deck, it needed a bit of extra paintwork. First, I masked off the upper section (aligning the tape edge to just below the Grille openings), as shown:

Then, I painted the lower part of the exterior wall with the same Mission Models MMW-05 Standard Rust acrylic paint I used before for these areas of my Titanic model:

Once the paint was no longer ‘wet’, I removed the masking and scraped away any paint overspray with the edge of my hobby knife:

Step 1

Carefully cut the four Grilles from the photo-etch sheet. Glue these Grilles into the matching recesses along this exterior of the Bulkhead, as shown.

Fun Fact: These Grilles opened into the enclosed 2nd Class Promenade/Boarding area on the Shelter or ‘C’ Deck right below our aft Bridge Deck.

Working on one grille at a time, I applied a couple tiny drops of super glue onto the recessed ledge of a matching opening. I highly recommend using a Vallejo T12005 Pick & Place or similar tool – it makes short work of installing these windows:

Step 2

Fit the keyed holes of the Connectors to the matching posts along the inside walls of this Bulkhead. After making sure these Connectors are straight, secure them to the Bulkhead with four (4) AP screws – one for each as shown:

Step 3

Retrieve your Bridge Deck assembly from the previous issue and gently turn it upside down. Fit the Connectors of this Bulkhead onto the matching posts at the rear end of the Third Section of the Bridge Deck, as shown:

Secure these Connectors to the Bridge Deck above with four (4) AP screws:

Step 4

Clip the LED Strip into this rearmost matching recess aligning the corner notches together:

Step 5

First, grab the LED Cable from this issue as well as the LED Cables supplied with the following issues: Issue 83, Issue 84, Issue 90, and the previous issue (all are marked ‘Z’ and total five Cables). Connect one end of a LED Cable to socket J3 of the rearmost LED Strip, as shown:

Connect the free end of this LED Cable to socket J3 (circled red) of the next LED Strip towards the front of the Bridge Deck. Then, connect a second LED Cable to socket J2 (circled yellow) of this same LED Strip, as shown:

Connect the free end of this second LED Cable to socket J3 (circled yellow) of the next LED Strip towards the front of the Bridge Deck. Then, connect a third LED Cable to socket J2 (circled red) of this same LED Strip, as shown.

The second LED Cable needs to be routed around the Stern Staircase:

Connect the free end of this third LED Cable to socket J2 (circled red) of the next LED Strip towards the front of the Bridge Deck. Then, connect the fourth LED Cable to socket J1 (circled yellow) of this same LED Strip, as shown:

Connect the free end of this fourth LED Cable to socket J3 (circled yellow) of the forwardmost LED Strip of the Bridge Deck. Then, connect the fifth and final LED Cable to socket J1 (circled red) of this same LED Strip, as shown:

Finally, connect the free end of this fifth LED Cable to the MOT/LED socket of the Tester (from Issue 3), as shown:

If desired, install batteries into the Tester to check for the proper lighting operation along the entire length of LED Strips:

Thoughts

Not only did we add the first wall of our aft well deck, we were able to test all of the stock lighting underneath our Bridge Deck. I believe these LED Strips are what the model is going to use to light all of the portholes in the Hull. This issue completes Pack 16, so store this entire assembly someplace safe until the next parts arrive!
