ISSUE 61

 Return to the BUILD

In this issue, we will complete the last of the Lifeboats. Then, we will add reflective material to our deckhouses.

This is going to be a long issue to complete. However, the later part of this one will be nearly identical to the steps of Issue 59.

The Final Lifeboats

Back in Issue 59, I hand-painted the Lifeboat Block Gear parts with Vallejo Model Air 71.023 Hemp acrylic paint to look more like rope:

Step 1

Retrieve your Boat Deck from the previous issue. Peel one of the Self-Adhesive Squares (61M) from the sheet and apply it into this recess for the Second-Class Entrance on the Boat Deck (Aft), covering the LED as shown.

I believe these white stickers are being used to tone down and diffuse the LED lighting better:

Peel another of the Self-Adhesive Squares (61M) from the sheet and apply it into this recess in front of the rear First-Class Staircase, again covering the LED as shown:

Step 2

Note the designations of the various stickers on the Self-Adhesive Reflector Sheet.

These Reflectors are identified by their shapes. I have noted them here:

Step 3

Retrieve your Second-Class Entrance assembly from the previous issue. Fit Reflector Sheet #1 to this interior starboard wall of the Entrance, aligning it to the window openings.

I highly recommend using tweezers for this as I have seen other builders struggle with these Reflectors. Since I am painting the insides of every deck structure on my Titanic, I am not using these stickers at all. However, I will show where they should go:

In the same way, fit Reflector Sheet #2 to this opposite interior port wall of the Entrance, again aligning it to the window openings:

Step 4

Fit Reflector Sheets #3, 4, and 5 to this aft interior wall of the Second-Class Entrance, aligning it to the window opening and around the posts as shown:

Step 5

Fit Reflector Sheet #6 and #7 to this forward interior wall of the Second-Class Entrance, aligning them to the window openings.

The magazine instructions say ‘aft wall’ but this is actually the forward wall:

Step 6

NOTE: Before I mounted my Second-Class Entrance here, I added a bit of Custom Lighting to this area. Check that page for more details!

Fit the three posts of the Second-Class Entrance into the matching holes of the recess at this location on the Boat Deck (Aft):

Secure the Entrance into place from below with two (2) HP screws (supplied in the previous issue):

Step 7

Retrieve your Base for Fourth Funnel assembly from Issue 57. Fit Reflector Sheet #9 to this interior port wall of the Base, aligning it to the window openings.

As before, my light blocking paintwork eliminates the need for these Reflectors. However, I will show where they go if you are using them:

In the same way, fit Reflector Sheet #11 to this small interior port wall of the Base:

Step 8

Fit Reflector Sheets #14, #10, and #15 to this interior forward wall of the Base:

Step 9

Fit Reflector Sheet #13 to this interior starboard wall of the Base, aligning it to the window openings:

In the same way, fit Reflector Sheet #12 to this small interior starboard wall of the Base:

Step 10

Fit Reflector Sheet #8 to this interior aft wall of the Base:

Finally, fit a foam Self-Adhesive Strip (61L) onto the center of the LED Strip inside the Base, as shown:

Step 11

NOTE: Before I mounted my Base for Fourth Funnel here, I added a bit of Custom Lighting to this area. Check that page for more details!

Retrieve your First-Class Smoking Room assembly from Issue 58. Feed the plug of the LED Circuit Board inside the Base for Fourth Funnel  down thorough this rectangular opening of the Smoking Room:

Fit the Base for Fourth Funnel onto the matching recess of the Smoking Room roof, as shown:

Secure this Base into place from below with four (4) AP screws.

The thicker wires on the right seen here are from my Custom Lighting mod:

Step 12

Feed the J4 plug of the of the LED Circuit Board inside the Base for Fourth Funnel down through this square hole of the Boat Deck.

I ran the wiring of my custom lighting inside the funnel Base AND the Smoking Room down through these same holes:

Fit this First-Class Smoking Room assembly to the matching recess of the Boat Deck, as shown:

On the underside of the Boat Deck, connect the plug of the funnel base LED Strip to this socket of the Boat Deck LED Strip, as shown:

Finally, secure the Smoking Room to the Boat Deck from below with six (6) AP screws – three on each side:

Retrieve your LED Cable from Issue 52 and attach it to this socket of the Boat Deck LED Strip.

We can also temporarily connect the free end of this LED Cable to the MOT/LED socket of our Tester Unit to make sure the lighting is working:

Step 13

Glue the two pins of three Davit Arms C1 (59G – with the vertical pins) into the matching vertical holes of the Davit Bases C (59A), as shown.

The Davit Bases C have four holes in them, while the Davit Bases D only have two:

Note the ‘pulley’ detail is to our left in this picture:

On the other side of these Davit Bases, glue the two pins of three Davit Arms C2 (59E) in the matching horizontal holes as shown:

Glue these three Davit Bases C into the matching holes at these locations on the starboard-side aft Decking.

Note these holes are different sizes, so the Davit Bases should only fit one way. For additional reference, the ‘pulley’ details should always be inboard.

TIP: If you feel comfortable doing so, you may want to wait to install these Davit assemblies until later on in the build. We will need to handle these large Deck assemblies quite a bit going forward and we risk damaging these small details as we go. However, for those who choose to install them as instructed, this is where the Davit Base C assemblies are installed on the Decking:

Step 14

Glue the pins of the two remaining Davit Arms C1 (59G) into the matching vertical holes on opposite sides of the two Davit Bases D (59C).

Face the ‘pulley’ details (circled) towards each other and secure the Arms on top, as shown:

Glue these two Davit Bases D into the matching holes at these locations on the starboard-side aft Decking.

Again, I am storing these in small plastic bags to keep them safe until we are done messing with the Boat Deck. However, if you are installing them now note how the curve of these Davit Arms should be facing towards the previous Davits, as shown:

Step 15

Press the Cover into this square hole at the center on the underside of the Boat Deck.

As I am using this hole for my Custom Lighting mod wiring, I did not install my Cover here:

Step 16

Fit the two Cutter Tarpaulins (61H – without holes) onto the top of the Cutters C and D (61I – smaller, shallower ones), as shown:

Step 17

Retrieve your Lifeboats from Issue 50 and Issue 52. Fit the four Tarpaulins (61F) onto the top of these two Lifeboats and the two Lifeboats from this issue. Then, slide the pins of the eight Lifeboat Blocks Gear through the matching slots in each Tarpaulin and into each Lifeboat, as shown.

Do NOT use any glue in this step. The parts of this assembly will remain loose for now, so take care not to lose any bits:

Thoughts

Yes, we have thankfully reached the end of the Lifeboats and Davits! I am storing all of my Lifeboats/Davits in marked bags until later, but I will definitely mention it in these pages when I install them for good.
