Build

The First-Class Smoking Room

Again to help with the light-blocking, in the previous stage I masked off and painted the interior surfaces of this First-Class Smoking Room (and the Second-Class Entrance from Issue 60). First, I airbrushed on a coat of Vallejo Model Air 71.057 Black acrylic paint. Then, I covered that with a layer of Vallejo Model Air 71.064 Chrome Metallic to help spread the light around:

Then, as part of my Frosted Windows mod, I added strips of sanded plastic to the inside walls of the First-Class Smoking Room behind the window openings. Again, I used various Colored Brush Sharpies to simulate the Stained-glass Windows:

When lit from behind, I feel this adds a nice touch:

Next, I hand-painted the end caps of these six Benches (and the two Benches from Issue 60) with Vallejo Model Air 71.057 Black acrylic paint and then gave them a light coat of Vallejo Game Wash 73.200 Sepia to bring out the details a bit better:

Finally, as with my previous deck fans/vents, I hand-painted the inside of the Cowl openings with Vallejo Model Air 71.270 Off-White acrylic paint:

Step 1

Test fit the Decking for Roof of Smoking Room on the surface of the First-Class Smoking Room. When happy with the fitment, carefully remove the backing paper from the Decking. Then, slowly adhere it into place aligning the various slots and holes as shown.

Be very gentle with this Decking as it is fragile and can easily snap apart. As with all of my Decking, these pieces (and the Decking parts for the rest of Pack 11) were sprayed (on the exposed sticky side) with my 3M 45 General Purpose Spray Adhesive:

Step 2

Using super glue, secure the two pins of Cowl (58F) into the matching holes at this location on the new Decking. The holes for these details are different sizes so the part will only fit correctly one way.

On my model, I have only been press-fitting these details in place just in case more detailed version become available at a later time:

In the same way, glue the two pins of Cowl (58H) into the matching holes at this location on the new Decking:

Step 3

Glue the two pins of Vent (58E) into the matching holes at this location on the new Decking:

This Vent (58E) has the pins closer together than the other:

Glue the two pins of Vent (58G) into the matching holes at this opposite location on the new Decking:

Step 4

Glue the tabs of two Benches into the matching slots at these nearby locations of the Decking, facing them as shown:

Step 5

Retrieve your Boat Deck assembly from Issue 53. Test fit the Decking for Boat Deck (Aft) on the rear section of the Boat Deck (Aft). When happy with the fitment, carefully remove the backing paper from the Decking. Then, slowly adhere it into place aligning the various holes and other openings as shown.

Again, be very gentle with this Decking as it is fragile and can easily snap apart:

Pay special attention to the openings around the two staircases:

Step 6

Glue the tabs of the remaining Benches into the matching slots at these locations of the new Decking, facing them as shown:

Thoughts

Our Boat Deck is becoming more and more detailed with every issue we do. I feel like more custom lighting work is coming soon!
