Build

Base for the Third Funnel

Back in Issue 51, I painted the inside surface of this Base of Third Funnel with light-blocking layers of paint. See that issue for more details:

Next, as before, I masked off and airbrushed the ‘fidley’ grates of this Base of Third Funnel with Vallejo Model Air 71.057 Black acrylic paint:

Once the paint dried and the masking was removed, this is how it looked:

Then, as part of my Frosted Windows mod, I added sanded plastic sheets behind the window openings after the LED Board was installed in Step 3:

Finally, as I have been, I quickly painted the inside of the bell on the Ventilator F (53H) with my Vallejo Model Air 71.270 Off-White acrylic paint:

Step 1

Retrieve your Boat Deck assembly from the previous issue. Glue the two pins of Ventilator B (53D), Ventilator D (53F), and Ventilator F (53H) into the matching holes at these locations on the Boat Deck (Aft).

Each of these Ventilators is designed slightly different. The two that are the most similar and could be confused are Ventilator D (53F) and Ventilator E (53G). However, if you look closely the Ventilator D is slightly taller and narrower than Ventilator E, as seen here:

These are the three Ventilators we need right now:

Beginning with Ventilator B (53D), secure it to the Boat Deck (Aft) at this location between the deckhouses, orienting it as shown.

As I have said before, I am fitting these details to my deck without glue at this time in case more detailed parts become available later on. All of the Ventilators have different sized pins so they should only be installed in the correct way:

Next, secure Ventilator D (53F) to the Boat Deck (Aft) at this nearby location, orienting it as shown:

Then, secure Ventilator F (53H) to the Boat Deck (Aft) at this nearby location, orienting it as shown:

Step 2

In the same way, glue the two pins of Ventilator A (53C), Ventilator C (53E), and Ventilator E (53G) into the matching holes at these locations on the Boat Deck (Aft).

These are the three remaining Ventilators. On the real Titanic, this Ventilator A was actually an enclosed staircase that led down to ‘Scotland Road’. It was used by White Star Line employees to reach the Engineer’s promenade for some fresh air or a cigarette:

Beginning with Ventilator A (53C), secure it to the Boat Deck (Aft) at this location between the deckhouses, orienting it as shown.

Next, secure Ventilator C (53E) to the Boat Deck (Aft) at this nearby location, orienting it as shown:

Then, secure Ventilator E (53G) to the Boat Deck (Aft) at this nearby location, orienting it as shown:

Step 3

Clip the LED Circuit Board into the tabs on the underside of the Base of Third Funnel.

Make sure the round LEDs (circled below) are seated in their matching holes of the Base, as shown:

We can test these LEDs by connecting them to the MOT/LED socket of our Tester Unit from Issue 3:

Step 4

Press the pins of the three Vents (53I) into the matching holes at these locations on the Base of Third Funnel roof, as shown:

Step 5

Retrieve your white Grille photoetch sprue from Issue 51. Cut Grille C (51I) from the sprue:

Then, test-fit and glue it into this matching opening of the Base of Third Funnel:

Retrieve your brown Windows photoetch sprue, also from Issue 51. Cut four Small Windows (51E) from the sprue:

Next, glue two of them into these matching openings in the Base of Third Funnel, as shown:

Then, glue the other two Small Windows into these matching openings of the Base, as shown:

Finally, glue the short pins of the Water Pipe for Third Funnel into these matching holes of the Base of Third Funnel roof, as shown.

Be careful when installing this Water Pipe as it can be accidentally attached backwards – see the picture below for the correct positioning. On my build, I did not glue this in place as I want to paint and adjust this Pipe to rest against the Funnel exterior once the Third Funnel is installed in the next stage:

Thoughts

We are quickly approaching the point in our build where we will have all four Funnels built and attached to our decking!
