Build

Lifeboats A and B

Step 1

Retrieve your Officers’ Quarters assembly from the previous issue. Identify the two pairs of lifeboat supports on either side and place the Lifeboats onto these supports. Use a drop of glue to hold them in place.

These Lifeboats are both identical, so it doesn’t matter which one goes on which side. It is worth noting that I have only temporarily placed the Lifeboats on these supports and did not glue them down on my model. I feel I want to improve their appearance and I am thinking of a few things to do:

Third Hull Section (Port Side)

Step 2

Retrieve your Hull assembly from Issue 10 and your Keel Section and IM screws from Issue 13. Fit the two rounded tabs on lower rear of the Hull assembly over the two posts at the narrow end of the Keel Section, as shown:

Secure the Keel Section to the Hull assembly with two (2) IM screws.

This is your friendly reminder to try using 3-in-One Oil on all screws going into metal:

Step 3

Fit the Third Hull Section to the port (left side) of the Keel Section, aligning the various screw posts as shown.

As I have been doing through this build, I airbrushed this lower section of the hull with Vallejo Anti-Fouling Red 71.442 and then sealed it with Vallejo Satin Varnish 70.522 acrylics paints:

Secure the lower edge of the Third Hull Section to the Keel Section from the inside with four (4) IM screws:

Step 4

Secure the forward edge of the Third Hull Section to the Connecting Panel (4C) with two (2) MM screws.

I found these MM hex screws (and the Allen Key to drive them) in a separate bag loose inside the box for this issue’s shipment:

The supplied Allen Key works OK for these screws, but it is very time consuming and not exactly that easy. Therefore, I used a stubby bit ratchet with a 2mm Hex bit to make this much quicker and easier:

Thoughts

I believe these Hull Section to Connecting Panel joints were originally designed to use the JM (crosshead) screws, but they are a right pain to use with the angled screwdriver. It appears the build was updated to use the new MM Hex screws instead which makes installation much simpler. The JM screws supplied with this issue are not needed, but keep any unused MM screws for use in Issue 18. Likewise, keep the unused Ventilation Duct stored safely until we install it in Issue 20.
